A Vancouver Island man is facing charges of impaired driving causing death following a 2025 crash that killed another man near the community of Fanny Bay, B.C. The B.C. Prosecution Service approved charges last month against Barry Munroe, of Port Alberni, authorities announced Wednesday. A statement from the B.C. Highway Patrol says Munroe was charged on June 24 with impaired driving causing death, driving with a blood alcohol content over .08 mg causing death and obstruction of a peace officer. The charges were announced nearly a year after the crash in the northbound lanes of Highway 19A. Mounties were called to the scene around 4 p.m. on July 31, 2025, after investigators said a black 2015 GMC Sierra Denali pickup truck, which was towing an RV, struck a man and several vehicles along the side of the road. The man later died from his injuries. The Denali driver was arrested at the scene for impaired driving causing death but was later released. Police then issued a call for witnesses and images from the crash scene to further the investigation. The statement says Munroe was arrested on July 13 and was remanded into custody for a bail hearing. Court records indicate Munroe was scheduled to appear in a Port Alberni courtroom on the charges Wednesday.
