A 52-year-old man has been arrested after allegedly starting a fire in his own apartment unit in the River-Osborne neighbourhood. Winnipeg police said that on the afternoon of Jan. 11 officers were called to a fire at an apartment complex on the 100 block of Clarke Street. Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Services (WFPS) members told police on the scene that the fire was being investigated as “suspicious in nature.” Officers believe the suspect allegedly set fire to furniture within his apartment which they say spread rapidly, caused significant damage, and endangered the lives of the building’s tenants, according to police. Police located the man who was still inside the building. He was charged with arson with disregard for human life and detained in custody.
