Winnipeg among communities under heat warnings

Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) has issued heat warnings for several communities in Manitoba’s southeast.

The yellow warnings stretch to the Manitoba-Ontario border and cover Winnipeg, Steinbach and Portage la Prairie.

“Temperatures are forecast to reach between 30 and 33 degrees on both Saturday and Sunday over southeast Manitoba,” the warning reads. “Sunday will be particularly muggy, with humidex values reaching the high 30s by mid-afternoon.”

ECCC said the heat will subside on Monday.

The agency is reminding people to keep an eye on the early signs of heat exhaustion in themselves and others. Signs of heat exhaustion include headache, nausea, intense fatigue, dizziness, and dark urine. ECCC said people should stop their activity and drink water if they experience these symptoms.

The City of Winnipeg reminded residents that clean drinking water is available at hydration stations around the city. A full list can be found on the city’s website.

Libraries and leisure centres can also act as cooling areas where people can grab clean drinking water and seek relief from the heat.
