For the second time in less than a month, a pair of Waverley West candidates’ campaign signs were vandalized. Nafiya Naso said she woke up to calls Saturday morning that several of her signs on Waverley Street and John Angus Drive had been torn up. “It’s really frustrating, given the positive campaign that my team and I have been running,” Naso said in an interview with CTV News Saturday. Only pieces of some of Naso’s signs could be seen on fences, with major portions missing. In other spots, it appears the signs were completely removed. This is the second incident involving Naso’s signs. At the end of August, several of her signs were tagged with graffiti. “I have an incredible team of volunteers who have put in so many hours putting up these signs, babysitting these signs. For this to happen again is really disappointing and very frustrating on many levels.” Jasmine Brar has been dealing with a similar situation. She said someone has been stealing her signs from in front of people’s homes for the last week and that several of her signs were missing Saturday in the same location as Naso’s. “It’s pretty disturbing, honestly,” Brar said. “It looks like somebody just went out with a knife or something. They sliced the signs. They did not just break it. So it’s very intentional.” Brar also dealt with graffiti on her signs last month and has been disheartened by the latest events. Neither Brar nor Naso knows why they are being targeted, but both said they are going to continue to power on with their campaigns. “We live in such an incredible community and I know we can do better. So, yes, it is a concern, but like I said, this is not going to stop me from continuing on the good work,” said Naso. “It is not going to scare me off and not my team. We are still pumped up as we were before. But this should not be happening. Waverley West is a very welcoming and very respectful community, and something like this we have no room (for) in Waverley West,” said Brar. Naso said she has filed a police report, but for now her focus is on the election on Oct. 28. “We will continue to door knock. We will continue to engage with the community and we will be there for Waverley West.” CTV News has reached out to Winnipeg police.
