Water main flushing set to start in some Winnipeg neighbourhoods

The water is safe for washing and bathing, but to consume it, water must be boiled for a full minute and allowed to cool.

Water main flushing is set to begin in parts of Winnipeg this week.

According to the city, the annual work will begin May 13 in a push to preserve water quality in southeast Winnipeg.

“Flushing water mains lets us test the water distribution system to make sure it’s running smoothly and reliably,” city manager of water services Mike Szmon explained in a news release.

“It’s routine but important work that helps the system stay in good shape.”

According to the city, crews will first flush water mains in St. Boniface.

They will work their way around the city until the end of August, focusing on St. Vital, Transcona and parts of River East.

The city said it will notify affected households two to four days before flushing work begins.

The notice will give more information about what to expect during and after the work.
