Walleye, bison and bluestem grass become official symbols in Manitoba

CTV Winnipeg: Walleye declared Manitoba's fish The province announced official emblems Thursday in Winnipeg.

WINNIPEG - The Manitoba government has chosen the walleye as the province's official fish.

The government has also announced the plains bison has been deemed the provincial mammal and big bluestem is to be the provincial grass.

Conservation Minister Gord Mackintosh says the decisions follow public input and will help promote environmental protection.

The walleye is already an official fish in other jurisdictions such as Minnesota and Saskatchewan.

The provincial symbols will be made official through a bill being introduced in the legislature.
