U of M students celebrate Louis Riel Day early with Métis celebration

The University of Manitoba marked Louis Riel Day with a kitchen party-themed event.

Louis Riel Day arrived early at the University of Manitoba’s Fort Garry campus on Friday, as students and staff gathered to celebrate Métis culture and history.

Attendees explored traditions through food, storytelling, and fiddle performances, along with a variety of activities. Participants also tried their hand at jigging, beading, and finger weaving.

The event was centred on a traditional Métis kitchen party—also known as a “chivaree”—bringing the campus community together in a spirit of learning and celebration.

Vanessa Lillie, director of cultural integration with the Office of the Vice-President (Indigenous), said Métis, Inuit, and First Nations peoples have long been underrepresented in education systems.

“It’s really important to create spaces for students, staff, and for us to learn together… but also to highlight our amazing and vibrant community here on campus,” Lillie said.

According to the university’s website, more than 3,200 First Nations, Métis, and Inuit students are enrolled at the institution. An enrollment report for the start of the 2025 academic year shows the university has just under 32,000 students in total.

Louis Riel Day is observed annually on the third Monday of February.
