Manitoba RCMP warn of online phishing scheme

Manitoba RCMP is warning the public about an online phishing scam involving fraudsters pretending to be police officers.

According to Mounties, the scam begins with a person receiving a random text or email that includes a link to a video conference with someone claiming to be an officer.

If the link is pressed, the scammer tries to convince the individual they could be arrested unless they help police by sending gift cards or bitcoin. Police added that the fraudster may also attempt to convince the person they have a warrant out for their arrest that can be removed by forwarding gift cards or bitcoin.

In the past few weeks, Mounties said, scammers have given dozens of individuals the RCMP general line phone number to convince them of their legitimacy.

Officers reminded the public they will never send unsolicited texts or links. They also won’t ask you to transfer money, provide remote access to your computer, or provide personal information via text message.

If you receive this type of message, you are urged to avoid clicking the link and to delete the text immediately. If you do click the link or provide personal information, you should contact your financial institution and report the incident to police and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.

To stay safe from scams, police recommend not clicking on links or downloading attachments from random texts or emails; never sending personal, credit card or banking details in response to unsolicited messages; and always verify the source of the messages.
