Resident helps put out fire at apartment on Henderson Highway

A resident helped contain a fire at a Henderson Highway apartment complex on Saturday.

Multiple emergency vehicles responded to a report of an explosion at 1660 Henderson Hwy. shortly before 2 p.m. Black soot could be seen around the balcony of a unit on the fifth floor.

When firefighters arrived, they saw smoke billowing out of the balcony.

“Our guys went up there and there was a person that already had put out much of the fire by the time they got up there, but our guys made sure it was contained to that one apartment,” said Dave Naaykens, acting district chief.

Naaykens said some residents self-evacuated after the fire started, but firefighters didn’t formally evacuate the building.

There were no serious injuries. Naaykens said the resident who helped put out the fire and an occupant of the unit where the fire started, were checked out by paramedics and released.

Investigators are determining the cause and cost of the fire.
