New system to speed up payments for those with basement flooding

The Manitoba government is taking steps to speed up financial assistance for those impacted by flooding between June 6 and July 1.

In a news release on Monday, the province announced it will be using the rapid residential assessment model (RRAM) for homeowners, tenants and other individuals with basement flooding.

The government explained this model calculates an initial assistance payment based on water depth, basement size, room type, level of finishing and restoration needs. RRAM also includes emergency work costs, including water extraction and removal of damaged materials.

The province emphasized that RRAM only covers building restoration costs. Damaged household contents are assessed separately.

Manitoba notes that its flood recovery assistance programs are aimed at helping Manitobans recover essential living conditions and don’t cover non-essential items, including decorative landscaping, outdoor furniture, or antiques.

Eligible individual claims are capped at $3 million, less the deductible, up to the cost of repairs or assessed property value, whichever is lower. A deductible of $2,500 or 20 per cent of the eligible assistance amount, whichever is greater, applies to all claims and is deducted from the payment amount.

Manitobans who’ve been impacted by flooding are encouraged to submit photos, receipts, invoices and estimates. For claims involving basement flooding, initial RRAM payments are expected to begin within weeks.
