The Manitoba government announced big funding for some rather miniature amenities at a provincial campsite. The province announced Friday a $2.5 million investment will build six new mini cabins at St. Malo Provincial Park. “We know yurts and cabins are very popular across the park system,” said Environment and Climate Change Minister Mike Moyes. “Our government is thrilled to provide Manitobans with a new comfort camping option by introducing our new made-in-Manitoba mini cabins.” The cabins are currently under construction in the Sunset Shores area, the province said. Each will include furnishings similar to the province’s yurts, with beds, an outdoor cooking area and electrical hook-ups. Guests will need to bring their own bedding and cooking equipment. Once completed later this summer, the cabins will be available for reservation through Manitoba Parks for $89.60 per night, taxes include, with a maximum stay of seven nights. The money also funded a new modern washroom on the main beach, replacing an old facility. The new and improved loo opened earlier this spring, the province said. Free provincial park access, summer programming Meanwhile, Manitobans can visit provincial parks for free and fish without a licence from Friday through Sunday. Vehicle permits are also not required to visit provincial parks from June 12 to 14, but regular camping fees will still apply at provincial campgrounds. Summer programming is also rolling out, including park interpreter-led guided hikes, living history demonstrations, kayak outings, historic site tours and campfire talks.
