A 20-year-old man has been charged in connection with the sexual assault of a woman in July, according to the Winnipeg Police Service. Police previously said the woman was walking south on Toronto Street on July 19 when she crossed Portage Avenue near Picardy Place at about 10:30 p.m. and was grabbed by an unknown man. The man threatened to harm her if she screamed and pulled her into a nearby alcove, police said. She was then allegedly choked, sexually assaulted and robbed. Police issued a public advisory at the time along with a description of the suspect. Investigators said a suspect was later identified through forensic analysis, and a warrant was issued for his arrest. On Sept. 15, investigators with the police service’s sex crimes unit went to the Headingley Correctional Institution and arrested the man, who was already in custody on an unrelated matter, police said. He has been charged with sexual assault and uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm, police said. He remains in custody. None of the charges have been proven in court.
