A cloudy and cool Tuesday is unfolding across southern Manitoba but an upswing is on the horizon. Winnipeg and the surrounding Red River Valley are in store for overcast skies with a slight chance of scattered rain or drizzle, although the risk is higher in southeast regions, like Sprague and Pinawa. Temperatures will peak in the upper single digits to low teens alongside strong northerly winds that should ease in the early afternoon. Winnipeg, for example, is forecast to reach a measly 9 C when 21 C is a seasonal high. Brandon and Neepawa can expect similarly cloudy skies, while a larger serving of sunshine is on the way to Dauphin and Swan River. Temperatures in those regions will be a hair warmer, with highs expected in the low to mid teens. Things are looking a bit brighter in northern Manitoba. The majority of the region is in store for a mix of sun and cloud with light winds and temperatures rising to the low teens - highs that are closer to what’s typical for late May through those parts. Overnight, a few clouds will linger in the north and temperatures will hover around the freezing mark. However, Gillam and surrounding regions have a 60 per cent chance of snow overnight that could linger into Wednesday. Meanwhile, skies are expected to clear in southern Manitoba overnight with northerly winds easing. Temperatures should hover around the freezing mark or slightly below under a surface ridge crossing into the region overnight. That could trigger some frost warnings. However, Wednesday is expected to mark the gradual return to seasonal or near-seasonal temperatures after a dank and chilly stretch. Temperatures through much of southern Manitoba on Wednesday are expected to reach the upper teens under sunny skies and strong southerly winds at 20 gusting at times to 40 km/h. Similar conditions are expected through northern Manitoba, as well, with clear sunny skies and seasonal values at around the 17 C mark. Temperatures continue to rise into the back half of the week in southern Manitoba. However, a developing low pressure system starting to materialize in the west will push into Manitoba overnight Wednesday, bringing a strong chance of rain and widespread thunderstorm activity. Those showers could linger for the better part of Thursday, but temperatures will stay warm and the back half of the week is looking sunny and balmy.
