Winnipeg’s network of intersection traffic cameras has grown from a single camera during a pilot project more than 20 years ago to 49 cameras across the city—issuing thousands of tickets each year to drivers who run red lights or speed through intersections. But just how busy are these cameras? According to the Winnipeg Police Service’s (WPS) latest annual report on the photo enforcement program, in 2024, each camera—referred to as an intersection safety camera—captured an average of just over two offences per day. Among all the cameras, the one at Main Street and Logan Avenue takes the all-time top spot, generating 99,536 tickets per the report since being brought into operation in July 2005. Meanwhile, the intersection safety camera at Kenaston Boulevard and Corydon Avenue generated 87,580 tickets since being installed in 2003, followed by 74,130 at Grant Avenue and Wilton Street. The report notes that most speeding offences captured by intersection safety cameras are between 10 and 14 km/h over the posted speed limit. The WPS started issuing tickets for speeding and red-light offences in January 2003 at 12 intersections that were previously tested with the traffic cameras.
