This Winnipeg intersection has the busiest traffic cameras in the city

A Winnipeg Police Service report reveals how busy intersection traffic cameras are around the city and where the most tickets are issued.

Winnipeg’s network of intersection traffic cameras has grown from a single camera during a pilot project more than 20 years ago to 49 cameras across the city—issuing thousands of tickets each year to drivers who run red lights or speed through intersections.

But just how busy are these cameras?

According to the Winnipeg Police Service’s (WPS) latest annual report on the photo enforcement program, in 2024, each camera—referred to as an intersection safety camera—captured an average of just over two offences per day.

Among all the cameras, the one at Main Street and Logan Avenue takes the all-time top spot, generating 99,536 tickets per the report since being brought into operation in July 2005.

Meanwhile, the intersection safety camera at Kenaston Boulevard and Corydon Avenue generated 87,580 tickets since being installed in 2003, followed by 74,130 at Grant Avenue and Wilton Street.

The report notes that most speeding offences captured by intersection safety cameras are between 10 and 14 km/h over the posted speed limit.

The WPS started issuing tickets for speeding and red-light offences in January 2003 at 12 intersections that were previously tested with the traffic cameras.

• Northbound Main Street at Logan Avenue: 2,436 tickets (2,793 tickets in 2023)
• Westbound Regent Avenue West at Owen Street: 2,240 tickets (2,660 tickets in 2023)
• Southbound Kenaston Boulevard at Corydon Avenue: 2,160 tickets (2,540 tickets in 2023)
• Westbound Grant Avenue at Wilton Street: 2,022 tickets (745 tickets in 2023)
• Southbound Pembina Highway at Chevrier Boulevard: 1,498 tickets (1,719 in 2023)
• Northbound Pembina Highway at Grant Avenue: 1,451 tickets (1,524 in 2023)
• Northbound Pembina Highway at Bairdmore Boulevard: 1,440 tickets (1,516 tickets in 2023)
• Eastbound Hespeler Avenue at Beatrice Street: 1,293 tickets (886 tickets in 2023)
• Eastbound York Avenue at Fort Street: 1,033 tickets (1,231 tickets in 2023)

Just over 35,600 tickets were issued in 2024 due to intersection safety cameras.

The report notes that several factors are considered when selecting an intersection for the stationary traffic cameras, including collision and speed data, public input and ensuring a balanced distribution throughout the city.
