Snowfall warning in effect, with 20 cm forecast for parts of Manitoba

A low pressure system pushing into Manitoba is expected to bring up to 20 centimetres of snow to parts of the province in the coming days.

Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) upgraded a special weather statement to a yellow snowfall warning on Monday afternoon for a large section of southwest Manitoba, including Brandon, Dauphin, Roblin and Riding Mountain National Park.

ECCC noted the system approaching from Alberta is expected to travel through east-central Saskatchewan and southwest Manitoba Tuesday night before tapering off on Wednesday morning.

Up to 20 centimetres of snowfall accumulation is possible, the weather agency forecasts.

The most notable hazard will be that accumulating snowfall, particularly over higher elevations in the Parklands, ECCC wrote.

Visibility may suddenly reduce to near zero at times, the alert said, while road closures are possible.

Meanwhile, wintry weather has already shut down a portion of the Trans-Canada Highway from Virden, Man. to the Saskatchewan border.

There is no indication as to when the roadway will reopen.
