Heat warning issued for parts of Manitoba; relief expected by weekend

A heat warning has been issued for parts of Manitoba as a hot and humid air mass is expected to move into the province Thursday.

The warning, which includes much of southern Manitoba and the central region, said that the most humid weather is expected by Friday, with humidex values anticipated to reach 40 C.

A heat warning has also been issued for parts of Northern Manitoba, in which temperatures are expected to reach 29 C, with overnight lows near 16 C for the next two days.

The heat warnings issued by Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) say that relief is expected by Saturday, as a cold front will track through the province Friday night.

ECCC is asking Manitobans to protect themselves by watching for early signs of heat exhaustion, which may include a headache, nausea, thirst, dizziness, intense fatigue, and dark urine.

To stay safe during the heat, ECCC recommends drinking water often, closing blinds, turning on air conditioning, and wearing lightweight, loose-fitting clothing.

City of Winnipeg assisting with beating the heat

In a media release, the City of Winnipeg is reminding residents of its nine hydration stations throughout the city where clean drinking water can be accessed.

People can also cool off at city-owned leisure centres and libraries during regular business hours.
