Give your Christmas tree a second life: Let’s Chip In depots open

Depots have been set up to allow Winnipeggers to recycle their natural Christmas trees in the coming days.

It is time to give your Christmas tree a second life.

The City of Winnipeg’s 10 Let’s Chip In depots are open as of Saturday. Residents can bring in their Christmas trees, giving trees second life in homes.

The city is asking residents to remove all decorations, lights, plastic bags and tinsel, take the tree off from the tree stand, and only bring real trees to one of the locations. The city cannot recycle the tree if the items remain on it, said Mark Kinsley, superintendent of waste division.

The city will recycle the trees into wood chip mulch. It will be available for pickup only at the temporary depots in early January, free for Winnipeg residents. It is not available at 4R Winnipeg depots, the city said.

Residents are asked to bring their own container and shovel. A full list of locations is available on the city’s website.

The program began in 1991 and has recycled more than 430,000 trees, the city said.
