Manitoba weather: Snow pounding parts of province

Soaring temperatures in southern Manitoba on Wednesday have been replaced by snow and freezing rain on Thursday.

The low that brought snow to central areas on Wednesday left cold air behind it, while the low pressure system affecting the south on Thursday is drawing in warmer air. The result – snow falling in western regions and the Interlake and freezing rain further south.

Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) issued a special weather statement for southern Manitoba. The weather agency said the highest concern is a freezing rain risk along and south of the Trans-Canada Highway corridor in the southwest and Red River Valley, including Winnipeg and Brandon.

Other areas, including Dauphin and Minnedosa, could see several centimetres of snowfall continue into Thursday night.

Snow, or a wintry mix that could include freezing rain, is expected to move into Winnipeg overnight and continue on Friday, which could make the morning commute slippery along roads and highways.

A special weather statement is also in effect for parts of northwestern Ontario, including Kenora and Dryden. By Thursday night, a wintry mix that will include freezing rain will continue into Friday.

Meanwhile, sunshine has returned to many parts of central and northern Manitoba on Thursday after a sizeable snowfall on Wednesday.

If you’re wondering when spring will truly arrive, temperatures will be cool over the weekend in Winnipeg, but sunshine will begin to return. Monday will be pleasant before temperatures shoot into the upper teens and low 20s closer to the midweek in the sunshine.
