While Friday afternoon gets off to a sunny start in Winnipeg, thunderstorms that bypassed to city to the east are moving into northwestern Ontario. That doesn’t necessarily mean the city is in the clear—a risk of thunderstorms will continue across much of southern Manitoba into this evening. The low pressure system responsible could also trigger thunderstorms in central Manitoba as it departs the region Friday. Meanwhile, wildfire smoke returning to the province Friday has prompted Environment and Climate Change Canada to issue an air quality warning for a large swath of central and northern Manitoba. Communities under alert include Flin Flon, The Pas, Norway House, Thompson and Island Lake. Island Lake could also see afternoon showers along with Gillam and Churchill in the northeast. Now that we are descending into late August, rest assured summertime conditions will continue throughout the weekend in Winnipeg, with sunshine or a mix of sun and cloud and seasonal daytime highs in the mid-20s.
