Manitoba weather: When will snow arrive in the province?

Sunshine has returned Wednesday to southern Manitoba and northwestern Ontario, but it won’t last long.

An Alberta clipper will form Wednesday and then race across that province and Saskatchewan over the next several hours before it arrives on our doorstep early Thursday morning.

Until then, enjoy today’s sunshine. Daytime highs across the south, including Winnipeg and Brandon, will reach between 4 C and 6 C this afternoon.

Northwestern Ontario will be cloudier and cooler, with highs Wednesday closer to 2 C or 3 C. An afternoon shower can’t entirely be ruled out either.

Most of northern Manitoba will see a mix of sun and cloud with the chance of flurries.

Communities closer to central Manitoba, including The Pas, Norway House and Island Lake, will see temperatures reach around freezing, while highs further north will remain sub-zero.

Clouds will build up Wednesday night across the south as the clipper approaches from the west.

Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) says the low pressure system will spread snow in a swath from the Grande Prairie region in Alberta to the Parkland region in Manitoba, including Dauphin.

The weather agency says 5–10 cm of snow is possible within that swath, although 10 cm is not likely at this point.

Southwestern areas further south, including Brandon, will see rain begin early Thursday morning before it spreads to Winnipeg and the southeast around mid-morning and northwestern Ontario early afternoon.

It’s possible snow will mix in with rain in the afternoon. Freezing rain is also possible, so be prepared for potentially slippery conditions as temperatures drop later in the day.

Precipitation will taper off Thursday night before sunshine returns Friday—along with colder temperatures. Daytime highs will remain below freezing thanks to a blast of cold air from the north behind the low as it moves out of our region.
