Colleen Bready’s forecast: Alberta clipper brings light rain and snow

Light rain and snow have made their way to southern Manitoba on Thursday, courtesy of a fast-moving Alberta clipper.

Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) says precipitation in the Parkland region will mainly be snow, while areas south and east through the Red River Valley and the Whiteshell region will see rain.

As early as Thursday evening, rain could begin to transition to flurries or snow as a cold front slump south over southern regions, including Winnipeg.

According to ECCC, snowfall amounts will be higher in the Parkland region and drop off substantially in the southeast.

Dauphin and Minnedosa are forecast to receive 5-10 cm of snowfall tonight, while 2 cm could fall in Brandon.

Any flurries or snow that falls in Winnipeg isn’t expected to amount to very much tonight.

Some sunshine will return Friday across the south, but daytime highs remain below freezing thanks to colder air from the north wrapping in behind the clipper.

Meanwhile, ECCC says a new low-pressure system will develop Friday in southern Alberta that will head southeast.

Snow may graze the southwest corner on Manitoba late Friday night, but should otherwise miss the province.

The winds it whips up, however, could bring lake-effect snow south of the Manitoba lakes Saturday. Yet another disturbance could bring a second round on the weekend.
