Mother rescues son who fell into creek near home: Manitoba RCMP

A four-year-old boy is in stable conditions after falling through a creek and getting sucked through a culvert.

Manitoba RCMP are reminding people to stay safe around the water as the snow melts after a four-year-old boy needed to be rescued and airlifted Monday afternoon.

According to RCMP, Mounties were called to a home southeast of Winkler, Man., just before 5 p.m. after learning a child had fallen into a creek near his home.

A news release said the boy and his older brother were playing in their yard, then moved past some trees towards the creek without permission. RCMP said the younger boy played on some ice and snow near the creek that suddenly broke off, which caused him to fall into the water.

The older brother ran to their mother and told her what happened. RCMP said she ran to the creek and then across the road where she couldn’t find him. She then found her son had been pulled by the creek’s current through a culvert.

With the help of a neighbour, the mom jumped into the creek and pulled the child to the banks. She was able to revive her son with CPR while 911 was called.

RCMP said the child was treated at the scene by paramedics and then taken by air ambulance to a Winnipeg hospital. He was in stable condition as of Tuesday.

Mounties are reminding Manitobans to stay away from the edges of streams, rivers, ponds and lakes to avoid falling into cold and often fast-moving water.

“The combination of melting ice and additional rain or snow can also lead to higher water levels that can destabilize stream and riverbanks, increasing the risk of accidents,” Mounties said in the release.
