Teen charged following alleged assault at University of Manitoba: police

One person is in custody and another is in hospital following an alleged assault at the University of Manitoba.

A 17-year-old has been charged and a man is in hospital after an alleged assault at the University of Manitoba Thursday night.

Police said around 7:30 p.m. a 17-year-old and a 32-year-old man were at Recreation Services at the university when the teen pulled out a knife and started assaulting the man.

The teen ran from the area, police said, and witnesses provided first aid to the man until emergency crews arrived.

“Staff called 911 to report an incident where an individual assaulted another with a weapon,” a university spokesperson said in a statement Friday.

The man was taken to hospital in unstable condition and has since been upgraded to stable.

Police said when officers arrived, security said the teen got on a bus trying to leave the area.

“Officers located the suspect and took him into custody without incident,” police said in a news release.

Police said the man and teen were known to each other and the attack wasn’t random. Both police and the university confirmed the pair are not connected to the university.

The 17-year-old has been charged with assault with a weapon and possessing a weapon and he remains in custody.

None of the charges have been tested in court.

The spokesperson for the university said supports are available for any students and staff that have been impacted by the incident.
