A man with a taste for burgers and fries has been arrested following a daring fast food restaurant heist on Thursday. Winnipeg police said the 29-year-old entered a fast-food restaurant in the 1500 block of Portage Avenue on the afternoon of Jan. 1. Winnipeg police confirmed the restaurant robbed was the A&W on Portage Avenue. Officers allege he demanded money from the front register and threatened to shoot employees. Police said the three employees were able to run to safety. According to police, the suspect unsuccessfully tried to open a cash register, then entered the restaurant’s kitchen and proceeded to steal hamburgers and fries, which were still cooking at the time. After exiting the restaurant, the suspect boarded a bus, where he ate the spoils of his theft. Police allege he also attempted to fight people on the bus, but no assaults were reported. Shortly after, the bus stopped and officers, with the help of the tactical support team, took the suspect into custody. He was found to be in possession of a stolen wallet and charged with robbery and possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000. The man was detained in custody. None of the charges have been proven in court.
