Driving on the Perimeter Highway during winter months is about to get a bit smoother. The province and the Manitoba Government and General Employees’ Union (MGEU) announced the signing of a memorandum of agreement, allowing for 24-7 winter maintenance on Highways 100 and 101. The snow clearing will occur on an as-needed basis, the province said. The change is intended to make travel conditions safer and reduce the number of disruptions to the Perimeter Highway. The MOA enables the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure to employ 24-7 snow clearing prior or to or during severe weather events, the province said. Two 12-hour shifts will be activated to provide the necessary coverage. “Bringing back 24/7 snow clearing on the Perimeter Highway means crews can respond faster during major storms and provide a higher level of service when our communities need it most,” said Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Lisa Naylor. The MOA took effect on Jan. 22.
