Windsor still dealing with wind damage after March storm

Windsor businesses are still busy with calls after damage was caused by a windstorm earlier this month. CTV Windsor’s Bob Bellacicco checks in.

Some residents are still reeling in the aftermath of wind events that caused damage earlier this month.

South Windsor resident David Xu was seen helping fix a fencing belonging to an elderly neighbour.

“It’s our second one. It’s another house so this is just the same,” Xu told CTV News.

Chad Kristalovic, owner of Perimeter Pro Fencing, has been busy since the wind events knocked over fencing across the region.

“Obviously high-class problem to have how busy we are right now. Phones are blowing up,” he said.

Kristalovic is normally doing other things at this time of the year like preparing his marketing campaign, training new workers and getting ready for the upcoming season to kick into gear closer to May.

“I’m booked seven days a week until mid-May now, which is crazy but yeah, it’s just how the dice went on that one.”

The Siding Guys were at a house near downtown Windsor repairing damage left by the last wind event.

Their business normally picks up in the spring, according to owner Jesse Thivierge.

“We kind of get a few here and there during the winter as winter storms damage,” Thivierge said.

This year the wicked wind has sprung his crews into action.

“I’ve got three repairs today. I did, three repairs Wednesday. Yesterday we couldn’t do anything because of the rain. And I’ve got six more repairs to go, unquote, today.” said Thivierge.

Shingles flew off homes as well. Dayus Roofing has attended to about a hundred repairs in the last two weeks according to Operations Manager James Murray, who says there have been three waves of calls.

“The third wave was really when everybody was coming back from March break and finding shingles off their roof and having to make the call a week after the event,” said Murray.

He says the wind events may have come at a good time for some with material costs set to rise in May.

“The timing could be fortuitous for some people if the roof is in disrepair, if the wind hit you really hard, and now is the time to get it looked at and to get a quote and an order made because after May, we could see some significant increases in price.” Murray warned.

He also reminds owners that homes are not maintenance free and offers a suggestion.

“We recommend, after the 10-year mark every couple of years, just having a qualified, professional on the roof, checking all penetrations, just making sure everything is up to date, and, that you have no issues,” he said.

Thivierge also suggests people take a walk around their homes twice a year, spring and fall, to ensure everything looks to be in order heading into and coming out of the freeze-thaw cycle.

“What we don’t want is people just looking at their houses when they notice a problem and then uncovering a bigger problem,” Thivierge said.
