Jazz legend Oliver Jones died on Wednesday at the age of 91. Montreal Mayor Soraya Martinez Ferrada was among those posting tributes to the legendary pianist and protege of Oscar Peterson. “A jazz legend has left us,” she wrote. “Thank you, Oliver Jones, for shining a light on Montreal on the world’s greatest stages. A faithful presence at the Montreal International Jazz Festival, where he delivered countless performances over the years, he leaves behind a musical legacy that will continue to inspire generations to come.” Quebec Premier Christine Fréchette spoke about Jones’s dedication to his hometown and to nurturing young talent. Her predecessor, Francois Legault, said Jones “helped Montreal be recognized as a great jazz city around the world.” “Quebec loses today an exceptional ambassador of its culture,” she said. The Montreal Black History Month Instagram account posted about not only his talent on the keys, but also his personality. “A true legend, his artistry at the piano, his warmth, and his boundless generosity touched millions of lives around the world,“ reads the post. ”Beyond his brilliant talent, Oliver was a beacon of light, grace, and kindness.”
