‘Two communities, one heart’: Windsor-Detroit Tunnel celebrating 95th anniversary

The Windsor-Detroit Tunnel is about to celebrate 95 years of connecting Canada and the United States.

According to a news release, the Windsor-Detroit Tunnel will celebrate its 95th anniversary on Monday, Nov. 3.

“When it opened in 1930, the tunnel was considered an engineering marvel,” the release reads. “A Studebaker was the first vehicle to pass through this architectural masterpiece, marking the beginning of nearly a century of connection between two nations.”

The tunnel was constructed in 26 months using groundbreaking techniques, and at the time of its completion was the first and only underwater international vehicular tunnel in the world.

In the present day it remains one of North America’s busiest border crossings, accommodating more than 12,000 vehicles daily and facilitating millions of journeys each year.

“The Windsor-Detroit Tunnel is more than a crossing – it’s a symbol of partnership and resilience. For 95 years, it has connected communities and strengthened the bond between Canada and the United States,” said Tal Czudner, CEO Windsor Detroit Borderlink Limited in a statement.

The release goes on to say that the tunnel has done more over the last 95 years than just offering an opportunity for commerce, but it has also “strengthened deep social and cultural ties between Windsor and Detroit” as families, friends, and visitors have used the tunnel to share in sporting events, concerts, and festivals on both sides of the river.

“Residents often describe their cities as ‘two communities, one heart’—a reflection of generations of shared heritage, from music and art to unforgettable sporting moments and beyond,” the release reads.
