Pelee Island mayor calling for new ferry after mechanical failure

The mayor of Pelee Island is calling on the province to be faster replacing the ferry, following a mechanical failure over the weekend.

The mayor of Pelee Island is calling on the province to speed up the process of bringing a new ferry into service.

Mayor Cathy Miller says the township has been advocating for a replacement for the aging vessel, the Pelee Islander, for more than three years.

She says the Ministry of Transportation has been responsive, but a mechanical failure over the weekend highlights the urgency for a new ferry.

Miller says it also needs to have more deck space for heavy equipment and additional vehicles.

The Ministry of Transportation issued a statement to CTV News.

“The Ministry of Transportation understands how vital the Pelee Island Ferry Service is to the region’s connectivity and economic well-being.

While mechanical issues and service disruptions are uncommon with the two vessels currently operating, we recognize the concerns raised and appreciate Mayor Miller’s advocacy on behalf of the residents and businesses of Pelee Island.

We value our ongoing collaboration with the Township of Pelee and remain committed to exploring and prioritizing solutions that support the island’s long-term transportation needs."
