LTVCA warns of possible flooding

The Lower Thames Valley Conservation Authority (LTVCA) has warned of possible flooding.

The authority said significant rain is expected Sunday, up to 45 millimetres, which could cause localized flooding in the watershed. The Thames River is expected to rise and flood low-lying areas near it.

“The rain is expected to last from Sunday morning until Monday morning,” LTVCA said.

“Monday morning, temperatures are expected to fall below freezing and the rain may change over to snow. Rainfall totals are predicted to be in the 35-millimetre to 45-millimetre range, with one outlier forecast currently suggesting we could see up to 75 millimetres.”

The ground will not likely be able to absorb much of the water due to recent rain and the time of year. The LTVCA said it expects to run the McGregor Creek Diversion Channel in Chatham.

You are reminded to be extra careful and avoid the river, ditches, and streams. Ice on the water is considered unsafe and with slippery banks, unstable ice conditions, and fast-moving cold water, it is dangerous.

Keep children, pets, and livestock away from water.

This is in effect until Jan. 2, 2026.
