ERCA: rain and snowmelt threaten waterways

ERCA issues flood outlook for Lake Erie shoreline

The Essex Region Conservation Authority (ERCA) has issued a Watershed Conditions Statement due to a combination of current rainfall, forecasted rain over the next two days and warmer weather accelerating snowmelt.

This advisory is in effect until 10 a.m. on Feb. 22, 2026.

ERCA says warm temperatures are causing snow to melt across the region, directing runoff towards watercourses that may already be containing snow and ice. Combined with an expected 10mm to 15mm of rain, this meltwater and rainfall could cause blockages and lead to watercourses spilling their banks into adjacent low-lying areas.

ERCA advises residents to exercise extreme caution. Avoid areas experiencing flooding, as well as rivers, streams, and shoreline areas during this period. The combination of slippery banks and fast-moving water can be dangerous. Standing water also presents unseen hazards. Keep children, pets, and livestock away from flowing or standing water.

The conservation authority will continue to monitor the situation.
