County urges riders to stay off ATV trails until May 1

The County of Simcoe is reminding residents that ATV and dirt bike trails remain closed until May 1, despite signs of spring.

Officials say riding too early can cause lasting damage to trails that are still wet and vulnerable from winter.

In a recent notice, the county shared that trails managed by the Central Ontario ATV Club (COATV) are currently closed for the next two weeks while cleanup and maintenance get underway.

“This annual closure is required by our landowners to protect their property, prevent rutting and ensure the trail system stays safe and sustainable for the season ahead,” stated COATV officials.

During this time, anyone seen on the trails wearing a COATV vest is authorized to be there. These people are club volunteers who are conducting inspections and maintenance checks ahead of the season.

The club stated recreational riding is not allowed during the closure. To be on the trail during the off-season, riders must have written permission from the landowner and be accompanied by a COATV board member.

According to COATV, anyone else found using the trails during this time may be considered trespassing and could face a fine of up to $215.
