Dog registration enforcement begins in Leamington

Leamington officials going door to door to make sure residents have registered their dogs

Dog owners in Municipality of Leamington can expect increased enforcement starting May 6, as officials roll out a door-to-door campaign to ensure compliance with local animal control rules.

Municipal representatives will be visiting homes across the community to confirm that dogs are properly registered under Animal Control By-law 668-06. Officials say all staff conducting visits will carry identification.

Under the by-law, all dog owners are required to register their pets and purchase a valid dog tag. The rules also limit households to a maximum of two dogs unless the property is licensed as an approved kennel.

Failure to comply could result in fines.

The cost of a dog tag is $55 per dog, which includes a late fee. Tags can be purchased online or in person at the Leamington Municipal Building on Erie Street North. The municipality notes that cash payments are not accepted.
