50 years after his mother was expelled from Uganda, Omar Sachedina returns to her village

Fifty years ago, Omar Sachedina’s mother was expelled from Uganda along with tens of thousands of other Asians. This summer, she returned to her village for the first time. Omar recounts, in his own words, the emotional return to his mother’s homeland on CTVNews.ca.

Senator Mobina Jaffer represents British Columbia in the Senate of Canada. She is the first Muslim senator, the first African-born senator, and the first senator of South Asian descent.

 

In an interview with producer Shelley Ayres, Jaffer reflects on nearly losing her father and her husband to Ugandan soldiers prior to being expelled.

"The expulsion from Uganda was absolutely traumatic for my family, but it was actually the best thing that could have happened to me," he told producer Shelley Ayres in the interview.
