People crammed into Victoria’s Market Square on Wednesday to watch Canada’s men’s soccer team take on Switzerland. In the middle of the work day, the viewing party drew hundreds of long-time fans, bandwagoners, locals and tourists alike. “We’re here today to celebrate the fantastic country that welcomes immigrants, refugees, people of all ages, sexes,” said Ased Said. “Let’s go, Canada!” The event was co-hosted by Whistle Buoy Brewing and the Drake Eatery, with support from the Downtown Victoria Business Association and the City of Victoria. “I’m 100% bandwagoning here. I have a lot of pride as a Canadian,” said Isaiah Archer, Whistle Buoy Brewing co-owner. Canada fell 2-1 to Switzerland. The team will still move ahead to the knockout round, playing in Los Angeles on Sunday. In Saanich, a store that sells soccer gear is almost out of Team Canada merch. “We thought we had our bases covered, but we started running out probably about two weeks ago,” said Soccer World owner John Leier. “I talked to dealers in Vancouver and they said the same thing. The life-long soccer fan and player hopes the hype has a lasting impact for the sport. “There’s going to be some growth, there’s no doubt about it,” Leier said.
