The colourful planters that help brighten Campbell River’s downtown core have become the focus of a police investigation after several large planter pots were destroyed. The damage happened on June 26, and investigators say a group of men were captured in photos and video that may help identify those responsible. Campbell River RCMP are now asking the public to take a close look at the footage and come forward if they recognize any of the individuals, their clothing or other details that could help investigators. The damaged planters are part of ongoing efforts to beautify the downtown core, much of which is supported by community groups and volunteers. RCMP spokesperson Maury Tyre told CTV News the investigation remains in the evidence-gathering stage, with police looking for additional video, witnesses or information that could help identify those involved. Tyre said police do not yet have an estimated dollar value for the damage, but said the impact extends beyond the cost of repairing or replacing the planters. “Much of the work to beautify our downtown core is undertaken by community groups like the Downtown Business Association and willful destruction of planters and gardens is disrespectful to the people that undertake efforts to make our city a better place to be,” Tyre said. “It’s our hope that someone in the community will recognize these individuals so that they can be held accountable for their senseless act of mischief.” Police say the available information suggests the damage was likely a random act of mischief rather than a targeted attack, although investigators say that could change as more information comes forward.
