Campfire ban returns to most of Vancouver Island as wildfire danger rises

Campfires will remain permitted in several northern coastal forest districts where wildfire conditions are lower.

A campfire ban is returning to most of Vancouver Island as warmer temperatures and drying conditions increase the risk of wildfires.

Starting at 12 p.m. Thursday, the BC Wildfire Service will prohibit Category 1 campfires across most of the Coastal Fire Centre, expanding restrictions already in place for larger open fires.

Campfires will still be permitted in the Campbell River Forest District, North Island-Central Coast Forest District, Haida Gwaii Forest District and Sunshine Coast Forest District.

It’s the second campfire ban of the wildfire season. A similar prohibition introduced in early May was lifted after cooler, wetter weather reduced wildfire danger.

Officials say the expanded restrictions are intended to reduce the risk of human-caused wildfires as conditions continue to dry across the region.

The ban covers most of Vancouver Island, the Gulf Islands and other areas within the Coastal Fire Centre outside municipal boundaries.

Campers in areas where Category 1 campfires remain permitted are still being urged to use caution. Campfires should not be lit in windy conditions, must be surrounded by a fuel break, cannot be left unattended and must be fully extinguished before leaving the site. Anyone whose fire escapes must immediately try to contain it and report it if necessary.

The prohibition also continues to ban Category 2 and Category 3 open fires, fireworks, burn barrels, burn cages, controlled air incinerators, air curtain burners and carbonizers throughout the Coastal Fire Centre.

The restrictions do not apply to CSA-approved cooking stoves fuelled by gas, propane or briquettes, provided the flame height does not exceed 15 centimetres.

The order applies to Crown land outside municipal boundaries, as well as provincial parks, conservancies, recreation sites and trails, ecological reserves, wildlife management areas and private managed forest land.

Municipalities may have additional fire restrictions, so residents are encouraged to check local rules before lighting a fire.

The campfire ban is expected to remain in effect until Oct. 31, unless officials lift it sooner if conditions improve.
