Black youth, racial equality in focus as B.C. city funds projects tied to United Nations initiative

Five projects supporting Black youth in Victoria are receiving a combined $25,000 from the city through a grant program connected to a United Nations initiative focused on advancing the rights of people of African descent.

The City of Victoria has awarded each project $5,000 through its International Decade for People of African Descent youth grant (IDPAD), an annual program administered by the city’s advisory committee.

“Our whole community benefits when young people can shape the future of our city,” Mayor-elect Marianne Alto, said in a release.

“The projects supported through IDPAD funding will help uplift youth of African descent and contribute to a more inclusive and thriving Victoria.”

Five projects, different approaches

The funded initiatives cover a range of interests and opportunities for young people.

One program will focus on mentorship and leadership development, with activities designed to strengthen public speaking, critical thinking and community leadership skills.

Another will introduce participants to skilled trades through hands-on career exploration and mentorship. A fashion, arts and digital storytelling showcase will provide opportunities for creative expression and skills development.

The remaining projects will support scholarship opportunities and career exploration in birth work and culturally responsive care, as well as a bilingual Black History Month initiative featuring exhibits and cultural programming about Black communities and leaders.

Committee member points to demand

Caleb Isaac, a youth member of Victoria’s International Decade for People of African Descent Advisory Committee, said the number of applications received this year highlights interest in the program.

“The IDPAD youth grant offers an opportunity to young kids of African descent that they simply cannot find anywhere else on Vancouver Island. This year, I was pleased to see so many applications, serving as a clear indication of the need for this work,” Isaac said.

“With the support of Victoria’s mayor and council, we have been able to support new and continuing programs that empower the kids of our community. I’m looking forward to supporting the city in further championing this initiative.”

The committee oversees the grant and advises city council on issues affecting Black communities.

The program is connected to the United Nations’ International Decade for People of African Descent, an initiative focused on advancing human rights and addressing racial discrimination. The first decade ran from 2015 to 2024, followed by a second covering 2025 to 2034.
