Charges laid in Surrey shooting that preceded motor vehicle collision

A 42-year-old man is facing several charges after a shooting in Surrey last month.

The call came in as a motor vehicle collision on University Drive near 103 Avenue shortly before 11 p.m. on March 24, the Surrey Police Service said in a news release Tuesday.

When they arrived, police found that the victim had been driving north on University Drive when they were struck by a bullet, according to the SPS.

The victim was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, and the SPS Major Crime Section took over the investigation.

Investigators identified and arrested a suspect, who was charged on April 1, police said. They did not name the suspect in their release.

Online court records show the accused is Kevin Donald Haggart, who has been charged with the following five offences:

• Reckless discharge of a firearm
• Assault
• Using an imitation firearm
• Carrying a concealed weapon
• Failing to comply with a release order

Haggart remains in custody and is scheduled to make his next appearance in Surrey provincial court on April 17.
