Evacuation alert lifted near wildfire in B.C.’s Okanagan

An evacuation alert affecting residents of three small communities in B.C.’s Okanagan lifted Sunday, as the nearby wildfire is now considered under control.

The blaze was discovered on Friday and burned approximately two hectares, according to the BC Wildfire Service, which suspects the fire was human-caused.

Those living in the unincorporated communities of Osprey Lake, Link Lake and Bankier, located at the middle point of the Princeton-Summerland Road, were told to be ready to leave at a moment’s notice.

“Due to the hard work of the crews and aviation resources this fire is now under control,” the BCWS said in an update Monday.

It said 18 firefighters and one helicopter continue to work on the blaze.

As of Monday morning, there were 126 active wildfires in B.C., with about 10 per cent classified as out of control.

“Wildfire risk and activity across B.C. remains elevated,” BCWS said in its provincial situation report Sunday. “It’s critical to exercise caution when recreating outdoors and ensure you are aware of the status of all open burning prohibitions in your region.”
