Whitecaps’ future at BC Place uncertain after club does not accept province’s latest offer

Despite coming off their best season in franchise history, the Vancouver Whitecaps’ long-term future in the city is still uncertain.

The Vancouver Whitecaps FC say the province’s most recent proposal to restructure the club’s stadium lease deal does not solve the financial challenges tied to operating at BC Place.

B.C.’s minister of jobs and economic growth says the latest offer to keep the Vancouver Whitecaps playing at the stadium would see PavCo, the Crown corporation that owns and operates the facility, “operating at net zero.”

“PavCo makes about $1.5 million of profit from the stadium arrangement that they have in place,” Ravi Kahlon told CTV News.

“Yesterday’s package that we offered them commits to returning the entirety of those profits back to them so that they will be operating at net zero for all the Whitecaps games going forward.”

Kahlon says other revenue options are also being discussed, including the potential sale of BC Place’s naming rights, which he said could benefit both the Whitecaps and BC Lions.

“That’s a conversation that is happening,” he said.

Vancouver Whitecaps CEO Axel Schuster told CTV News that the offer does not provide a sustainable solution.

“Unfortunately, our gap between being top seven in attendance and last in revenue is so significant that this effort alone isn’t the game changer that is needed for long-term sustainability,” said Schuster in an emailed statement to CTV News.

“We are committed to working collaboratively to identify solutions that ensure the long-term home of Whitecaps FC in Vancouver.”

Kahlon emphasized there are limits to what the government can provide.

“We want to see them here, but we have to find that balance between making sure that they can be viable, as well as (making sure) the taxpayers are not operating and running a professional sports team,” he said.

The Whitecaps are coming off the most successful season in franchise history but have been up for sale since late 2024.

Schuster says there are currently no interested buyers, citing ongoing difficulties turning a profit while playing at BC Place.

Kahlon has suggested the club’s challenges extend beyond stadium economics.

“The challenges that the Whitecaps are dealing with appear to be much more complex than just a stadium arrangement,” he said.

The Vancouver Whitecaps declined CTV News’ request for an interview. The province says talks between the two sides are ongoing and happening daily.

Just before the new year, the City of Vancouver and the Whitecaps signed a memorandum of understanding to enter exclusive talks on a proposed new stadium and entertainment district at Hastings Park. Any new stadium, however, would likely be several years away.

In the meantime, Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim is urging the province to finalize a deal that keeps the team at BC Place.

“I would really implore that the province to, you know, sharpen their pencils and support the Whitecaps,” said Sim. “We’re talking about a generational asset that is, like, it’s so important to the residents of Vancouver, but it also makes a lot of economic sense.”
