The chair of the Vancouver Police Board will be concluding his term come the end of June, according to a statement by the board. On Tuesday, the board said Frank Chong’s “scheduled departure marks the successful completion of the maximum six-year director term under the B.C. Police Act, and a full two-year term as board chair under the VPB board manual.” According to the board, it provides a 90-day advance notice of departure. Chong said during his six years with the VPD board, he is most proud of “the culture of trust we have cultivated.” “By fostering a cohesive, policy-driven Board, we have been able to champion the necessary investments for the VPD to excel in their challenging work. Our principled and open partnership with the City of Vancouver has been the cornerstone of this success, ensuring that our oversight remains at the forefront in a collaborative manner.” Chong became chair in June 2024 when he replaced Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim. During Chong’s tenure, CTV News revealed the police board did not learn about Task Force Barrage—a $5-million dollar initiative to tackle crime on the Downtown Eastside—until Sim announced it in the media. A new chair will be announced at the April 23 police board meeting.
