Anyone travelling to the United States from Vancouver International Airport is being asked to prepare for longer lines at customs as pre-clearance programs are suspended. In a notice Sunday, YVR said NEXUS and Global Entry are unavailable until further notice, “due to the partial U.S. Government shutdown.” “This change may impact processing times for travellers departing for the U.S.,” the notice reads. “We will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as they become available.” Both NEXUS and Global Entry allow pre-approved, “low-risk” travellers to cross the border faster. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security said Saturday that it planned to suspend Global Entry and the Transportation Security Administration’s PreCheck program, but later cancelled the PreCheck closure. The DHS said Sunday Global Entry would remain suspended as long as the partial federal government shutdown continues, which began Feb. 14 after Democrats and the White House were unable to reach a deal on legislation to fund the DHS. Democrats have been demanding changes to immigration operations that are core to U.S. President Donald Trump’s deportation campaign.
