Thousands of people across the country showed up all in the name of a worthy cause. To continue a young man’s legacy, the Terry Fox Run took place in several communities throughout Canada, including Simcoe County. The Barrie run reached its goal of $125,000, surpassing 2025’s total amount of $88,000. The run took place at Centennial Beach along Barrie’s waterfront. Other participating communities included Collingwood, Wasaga Beach, Alliston, Midland, Bracebridge and Gravenhurst. Brian Vanderstelt, the father of a young, Alliston hockey player, tells CTV News his daughter’s team not only reached their goal but surpassed it. New Tecumseth U18AA Icecats hockey team participated in the Alliston run at Earl Rowe Provincial Park, even after finishing their Saturday evening game by 11 p.m. in Oshawa. Their team goal was $2,000, but raised even more coming in at $2,762. Terry Fox began his Marathon of Hope in 1980, when he ran halfway across Canada with an artificial leg, after having been diagnosed with bone cancer when he was 18. He ran the equivalent of a full marathon and raised $24 million over the course of his journey. He died at the age of 22.
