Travellers passing through Vancouver International Airport may soon notice shorter wait times and fewer hassles at the gate, as officials roll out new technology ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The airport has expanded its use of biometric boarding, with 42 biometric-enabled gates now in operation, part of a broader effort to streamline passenger flow during what’s expected to be a surge in travel. Officials say the new biometric e-gates are expected to speed up boarding by about 13 per cent. YVR has also introduced new CT screening technology at security checkpoints, allowing travellers to keep liquids and large electronics in their bags. Preparations for the anticipated influx of visitors tied to the FIFA World Cup have been underway for several years, officials said. “We’re ready. We’re looking forward to it and hoping everyone has a lot of fun.” said COO of YVR Andy Margolis. Officials spoke just over a week before kickoff in Vancouver, as agencies involved in the airport’s operations outlined their readiness. “Together, we’re delivering what we believe is a best-in-class experience and something that will leave a legacy for our future generations.” said Jesse Adcock from the FIFA World Cup 2026 Vancouver Host Committee. Margolis explained, during the tournament period, the airport expects to welcome 2.7 million passengers — about 88,000 people a day — representing a five to 10 per cent increase over last year. “Rather than build new infrastructure, we focused on innovations to improve the passenger experience and allow people to move through the airport quickly and efficiently,” he said. Security is also a major focus, with YVR saying it has effectively doubled its on-the-ground security presence while the Canada Border Services Agency has shifted resources to meet the expected demand. “For large and significant events like FIFA, the CBSA reviews our operations to prepare for increased traveler demands by shifting our resources,” Jackie Tse the COO of CBSA within Vancouver International Airport District said Beyond operations, the airport is also leaning into the tournament atmosphere, with FIFA-themed installations, merchandise and photo opportunities aimed at enhancing the passenger experience. “Our passengers, our employees alike, can get into the spirit of the games,” said Margolis. Officials are urging travellers to check their flight status, arrive prepared and ensure their travel documents are up to date.
