Eagles descend en masse in Fraser Valley

The largest winter gathering of its kind is underway in the Harrison River Valley, with thousands of birds stopping in for a visit and a snack.

One of the largest winter gatherings of bald eagles in the world is once again underway in the Harrison River Valley.

Seemingly countless birds have descend on the region in search of a warmer climate and salmon.

Visitors are lining riverbanks, equipped with binoculars and high-powered cameras, searching for eagles perched high in trees or on sandbars.

“I’ve lived here for 25 years and have never come out,” said Maple Ridge resident Gitane Chubb.

“This is the first time I’m seeing this. It’s incredible.”

The migrating eagles typically arrive between November and February, leaving colder northern climates for the Fraser Valley’s milder weather.

Vancouver resident Carolyn Matt said it’s a sight that’s difficult to capture without being there in person.

“You’ve got to come and observe this,” she said. “I don’t know, how many eagles do you think we have out there? Hundreds?”

North Vancouver resident Lou Lehmann, who is a regular here, said the water levels will eventually bring the birds even closer.

“(It’s) a little early right now,” he told CTV News.

“The water’s pretty high. It gets better. The eagles come in closer when the water is low.”

The Harrison River Valley is roughly a two-hour drive from Vancouver.
