Several units damaged in raging fire at Surrey, B.C., townhouse complex

A fire that erupted at a townhouse complex in Surrey, B.C., on Monday damaged several units, leaving a number of residents displaced.

Authorities said the flames broke out at a property near 72 Avenue and 144 Street around 4:20 p.m.

The fire sent a massive plume of dark smoke over the city that was visible from neighbouring Metro Vancouver municipalities.

Authorities said 45 firefighters responded to the blaze, and that officers from the Surrey Police Service were also called to help evacuate the complex.

No one was injured in the fire.

Police said the cause of the fire was unclear as of Monday night, but remained under investigation.
