Pride and other events happening in Vancouver this B.C. Day long weekend

The B.C. Day long weekend brings a multitude of festivals and special events to Metro Vancouver, headlined by the annual Vancouver Pride Parade.

Whether you’re one of the more than 100,000 expected to hit the West End for Pride or looking for a smaller gathering, here are some events to check out over the next few days.

Vancouver Pride Parade and festival

The parade on Sunday is the Vancouver Pride Society’s signature event, but there are also more than a dozen parties, shows and performances scheduled for Friday through Sunday as part of the festivities.

Perhaps most significant among these is the return of Davie Village Pride Fest. After a six-year absence from the city’s historically gay village, the post-parade street festival is returning to Davie Street and Nelson Park, with “live music, drag, DJs, roaming performers, community vendors, and interactive experiences” all planned, according to organizers.

The festival runs from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Davie Street between Burrard and Jervis streets, and from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. in Nelson Park. The parade begins at 1 p.m. near Roundhouse Community Arts and Recreation Centre in Yaletown and proceeds down Pacific Boulevard to Burrard Street.

Celebrate BC

Coquitlam’s Town Centre Park will play host to what organizers are calling “the largest salmon barbecue in B.C. history” for B.C. Day on Monday.

Celebrate BC is a free, one-day festival organized by S.U.C.C.E.S.S., the City of Coquitlam and the kʷikʷəɫʻɛɛm (Kwikwetlem) First Nation.

Featuring live entertainment including an Indigenous fashion show, zip lines, food trucks and more than 2,000 pounds of salmon, the event runs from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.

49th Annual Powell Street Festival

Vancouver’s Japanese community will come together in and around Oppenheimer Park Saturday and Sunday for the 49th Annual Powell Street Festival.

In addition to Japanese-Canadian food, art and craft vendors, the festival features two stages of musical and cultural performances, a sumo tournament, martial arts demonstrations, taiko drumming and more.

The festival runs from 11:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. each day.

West Vancouver Harmony Arts Festival

Friday marks the start of 10 days of “music, art, food and community by the waterfront” in West Vancouver’s Millennium Park.

Harmony Arts Festival is a free daily concert, art exhibition and market, with varying hours and offerings through Aug. 10.

The festival is open until 10 p.m. daily during that time, beginning at 11 a.m. on weekends and in the afternoon on weekdays.

White Rock Sea Festival and Semiahmoo Days

Head to White Rock this Saturday and Sunday for the 74th annual White Rock Sea Festival and Semiahmoo Days, hosted by the city and the Semiahmoo First Nation.

Three stages of live entertainment, food trucks and a kids zone will be set up along the waterfront, with a torchlight parade planned for Saturday evening and a fireworks finale on Sunday.

Festivities start at noon each day. The parade begins at 8:30 p.m. Saturday and the fireworks begin at 10:15 p.m. Sunday.

For the sports fans

The Whitecaps, Lions and Canadians are all out of town this weekend, but Vancouver Rise FC will host Ottawa Rapid FC at Swangard Stadium at 4 p.m. Saturday.

On Sunday, the Vancouver Bandits will host the Winnipeg Sea Bears at the Langley Events Centre at 5 p.m.
