Overnight closures coming to Ironworkers Memorial Bridge

Overnight lane closures on the Ironworkers Memorial Bridge are set to begin Sunday and last for more than a week.

The transportation ministry said drivers using the crossing can expect delays of up to 20 minutes while repair work is underway and traffic is down to one lane in each direction.

“The closures are necessary to allow the Ministry of Transportation and Transit’s maintenance contractor to complete deck and joint repairs on the bridge,” a statement from the ministry said.

The announcement of the closures comes with the caveat that the repair work is weather-dependant and the timing subject to change.

On Sunday, the lane closures will begin at 10 pm. The bridge will fully reopen at 5 a.m. Monday. From March 9 through March 17, the lanes will close at 9 p.m. each night and reopen at 5 a.m. each morning.

Cyclists and pedestrians are “encouraged” to avoid the bridge and find alternate routes.

“Drivers are reminded to obey all traffic signage and traffic-control personnel in the area and adjust speeds as posted through the construction zone,” the statement from the ministry continued.

“Drivers should plan additional travel time through the route during the closure schedule and expect delays around the start time each night.”
