Murder charge laid after man shot dead in Langley, B.C.

A man has been charged with murder after a fatal shooting in Langley, B.C., last week, homicide investigators announced Tuesday.

Langley RCMP officers were initially called to the 5400 block of Brydon Crescent just after 11:30 p.m. on May 26, and located a man in medical distress.

Despite the efforts of first responders, the 47-year-old victim—whose name has not been publicly released—died at the scene.

“Over several days, IHIT investigators worked tirelessly to speak with witnesses and examine the shooting scene. Following the evidence trail, investigators were able to piece together the events leading up to the shooting,” the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team wrote in a news release.

Justin Hopkins-Jones, 37, was arrested and charged with second-degree murder over the weekend.

“Despite the complexity of investigation, IHIT investigators were able to quickly identify and locate the accused,” IHIT spokesperson Sgt. Freda Fong said, in the release. “This was made possible by the witnesses who came forward with information and the strong collaboration between IHIT and its policing partners across the Lower Mainland.”

Police believe the shooting was an isolated incident and that the victim and suspect knew one another.

Hopkins-Jones remains in custody and is next due to appear in court on June 5.
